Watching the space, not the ball
Where the game is decided, a few seconds before the camera shows it.
A match is a conversation about space. The ball is only the loudest speaker.
I count things on Saturdays: passes, pressing triggers, how many seconds a team needs to re-form its shape.
Pay attention, then count.
What I would tell my past self
Teams that keep their shape rarely look brilliant. They just keep being in the right place.
Watching the space instead of the ball ruined my viewing and improved my understanding in equal measure.
